Chocolate + Whiskey = Sublime Flavor

Chocolate and whiskey make for a delicious combination. Check out these drink and dessert recipes made with Bird Dog Whiskey.

“Chocolate.” The word alone evokes sweet, velvety warmth. For some of us, like the Aztecs, chocolate is truly a gift from the gods (in fact, they revered it so much, they used it as currency).  Few things in life can’t be improved on with chocolate. And, whether in drinks or rich desserts, whiskey and chocolate together create a flavor combination that is positively transcendent. For those who can never get enough of life’s sweetest pleasure, here’s a short list of delicious chocolate and whiskey drinks, complemented by a few easy-to-make, decadent desserts.

Chocolate and Whiskey Cocktails

For these mixes, we offer two ways to go: classic bourbon and chocolate drinks made with either Bird Dog Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey or Bird Dog Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 7 Year Old Small Batch, and recipes featuring the rich cocoa taste and vanilla and caramel notes of Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey.

Chocolate Cocktail

1.5 oz Bird Dog KY Straight Bourbon Whiskey
1 oz Dark Chocolate 
1 oz Dark Chocolate Shavings 
1 oz Chilled Strong Coffee
.5 oz Apricot Brandy
1 Teaspoon Maraschino Cherry Juice 
5 Drops Chocolate-Flavored Bitters  

Melt dark chocolate and place melted chocolate in the saucer of a teacup. Place dark chocolate shavings into a second saucer. Using an old fashioned glass, dip 2/3 of the length of the rim into the melted chocolate. Immediately dip the chocolate rim into the chocolate shavings so that they stick. Chill the glass. Mix Bird Dog Bourbon, chilled strong coffee, apricot brandy, juice from a jar of maraschino cherries and chocolate flavored bitters with ice in a mixing glass until the liquid is chilled. Pour into the chilled old fashioned glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a skewered maraschino cherry. 

Chocolate Bourbon Milkshake

1.5 oz Bird Dog KY Straight Bourbon Whiskey
.5 Cup Milk
2 Tablespoons Malted Milk Powder
1 Cup Chocolate Ice Cream 
Whipped Cream

Add milk, Bird Dog Bourbon, malted milk powder, chocolate ice cream, and ice to a blender. Blend on low, slowly increasing the speed until smooth, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add more milk if a thinner milkshake is desired. Pour chocolate malted whisky milkshake into 2 8 oz glasses and top with whipped cream. 

Brandied Chocolate Manhattan

1.75 oz Bird Dog KY Straight Bourbon Whiskey
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
.75 oz Brandy
3 dashes chocolate bitters 
brandied Cherries

Add Bird Dog Bourbon, sweet vermouth, brandy, chocolate bitters and ice to a mixing glass and stir. Place one brandied cherry in the bottom of a coupe (a type of champagne glass with a long stem and broad, shallow bowl) or martini glass. Strain the mix into the glass. Garnish with another brandied cherry.

Whipped Chocolate Whiskey

1 oz Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey
.5 oz Irish Cream Liqueur 
Whipped Cream-flavored Vodka 

Mix Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey, Irish Cream Liqueur and whipped cream-flavored vodka in a rocks glass with ice and stir. 

Chocolate Martini Cocktail 

2 oz Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey 
oz Creme de Cacao  

Add Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey and Creme de Cacao to a shaker with ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a martini glass. Serve as a shot by cutting the alcohol amounts in half.

Banana Split Cocktail

1 oz Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey 
.5 oz Banana Liqueur
Maraschino Cherry

Mix Bird Dog Chocolate Flavored Whiskey and banana liqueur. Place a stemless maraschino cherry in a shot glass and add liquor.

Decadent Chocolate and Bourbon Desserts

Nothing tops off a great meal like a perfect dessert; chocolate and bourbon can only make it better. The following recipes can be made with either Bird Dog Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey or Bird Dog Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 7 Year Old Small Batch.

Bourbon Fudge Cream Cheese Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1 box fudge brownie mix
  • 3 eggs (divided into 2 eggs and 1 white)
  • .5 cup + 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Bird Dog KY Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish, set aside.
  2. In a large bowl combine brownie mix, 2 egg yolks, and canola oil. Mix until just combined.
  3. In a stand mixer or another large bowl with electric beaters, cream together cream cheese and powdered sugar.
  4. Next, add 1 egg white and Bird Dog Bourbon into the cream cheese mixture, mixing well.
  5. Pour ¾ of the brownie mix into the prepared baking dish, then top with cream cheese mixture.
  6. Drop the remaining brownie mix onto the cream cheese layer in rounded heaps.
  7. Drag a knife through the brownies in an S shape to create a swirl.
  8. Bake for about 45 minutes until the bourbon cream swirl is golden and brownies are set. When you insert a toothpick, it should come out clean.

Fudgy Bourbon Balls

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups chocolate cookie crumbs  
  • 1.25 cups pecans
  • .5 cup Bird Dog KY Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus additional for rolling
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tablespoons honey

Directions:

  1. In a food processor, pulse together cookie crumbs and pecans until the nuts are finely ground.
  2. In a separate bowl, stir together Bird Dog Bourbon, 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder and honey. Add the mixture to the food processor and pulse until just combined. Let the dough rest, uncovered, at room temperature for 4 hours or, lightly covered, overnight. 
  3. Use your fingers to roll the dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Roll the balls in confectioners’ sugar. Store the balls airtight if you like them moist or uncovered if you want them to develop a crunchy sugar crust on the outside. Sprinkle additional confectioners’ sugar just before serving.

Chocolate Bourbon Sauce

Ingredients:

  • .5 cup half & half
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • .75 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • .25 cup Bird Dog KY Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Directions:

  1. Place chocolate chips and vanilla in a glass bowl.
  2. Pour hot mixture over chocolate chips and stir until smooth.
  3. Add Bird Dog Bourbon and stir to combine.
  4. Store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.
  5. When you’re ready to use the sauce, just warm it up in the microwave for a minute and pour over ice cream or fruit.
